Art from Grand Junction to Denver and Back

Denver Art Museum

African

This week in the studio wasn't spent in my studio at all. I made a trip to beautiful Glenwood Springs to drop off pieces to the Glenwood Springs Fall Art Festival. Then, it was off to Denver for an adventure at the Denver Art Museum (DAM). The DAM building itself is a piece of art of incredible architecture.
I started in the African art gallery. The ancient African pottery had carved symbols and was a terra-cotta colored clay. After enjoying the African art it was off to the balcony to enjoy the view of skyscrapers.
The oriental art was amazing. I loved looking at the intricately carved pieces and reading the story of what they were used for so many years before. I was inspired by the oriental pottery the most. The beautiful Japanese painting on the ceramics and the carving gave me ideas for my pottery. Even though I am mainly a ceramic's artist I enjoyed seeing the Japanese screens as well. The Japanese symbols are fascinating, I can't imagine how long it would take to master the language.

Almost all of the pieces in the ancient Costa Rican exhibit resembled animals. I plan to research if they were gods or symbols of their religion. There was also a Costa Rican teapot that inspired me to experiment with a new type of handle and spout.
No matter where I went in Denver there was something that had to do with art around every corner. Whether I spent my time watching street corner musicians, listening to pianists while walking around the 16th Street Mall, or graffiti artist show their talents, I enjoyed all of it. I ended my museum day with a stroll through the Tattered Cover Book Store which had a plethora of art books.
On the way home I attended the Glenwood Springs Fall Art Festival and  delighted in seeing the art ranging from amateur to professional. I was thrilled when I saw one of my pieces, a turquoise vase, had received 2nd place in the amateur division. It was a great way to end my art journey!
